Google Update Brewing? Chatter & Tools Point To Algorithm Update

Google Update Brewing
Over the past 24-hours, the ongoing WebmasterWorld thread has seen an uptick in chatter around ranking and traffic changes from Google. Plus, many of the tracking tools that have updated for the day are showing signs of a Google update. Let me be straight, either the update is just starting or the update was fairly minor - I do not think this was a major update.
Here are some of the tools showing changes, keep in mind, MozCast has not updated yet today.

Some of the chatter is around zombies, but some about traffic. Here are some quotes from the past 24-hours or so:
Seeing the same here. I have had converting traffic for the last 2-3 hours, won't it be a surprise when we all see a sudden drop to zombie land at the same time again? Oh yeah... no.
Here's a weird one for you that most likely goes against the grain. We saw big improvements in organic on the 15th Dec, but then around the 12th Jan, we saw declines again. To confirm, we dont use interstitials or popups. Very strange.
We have seen something similar but kind of in reverse. We saw slight drop around the Dec 15, then a pickup around Jan3. A record day Jan 11, 12 and now back down to normal. None of these changes are statistically significant. To confirm, we dont use interstitials or popups either.
Intense organic traffic right now. Very rare for being a Monday.
Did you notice ranking changes and Google traffic changes in the past 24-hours?

Google Algorithm Update On January 16th, MLK Day?

Google Algorithm Update
Yesterday was a US holiday, so overall there was less people working, searching and buying online. But, also that means there were less SEOs and webmasters watching the search results. It seems some folks in the ongoing WebmasterWorld forums are asking about an update.
I'm in meltdown again. We've seen generic drops again and we do not use interstitials whatsoever. Whats more puzzling is that one of our competitors does... AND the drops are on Desktop not Mobile. I'm beyond confused, looking for answers. I'm afraid im seeking answers that aren't there.
And some of the automated tools did pick up on an update yesterday.
MozCast shows stormy weather:

AccuRanker also shows an uptick in weather:

RankRanger showed an uptick yesterday as well:

However, Advanced Web RankingsAlgoroo and SERP Metrics seem static.
Google did say, it is possible for tools to see test buckets and show weather based on that. We know the issues with the tools and of course, even what I pick up on.
Did you notice ranking changes early this week?

Google confirms rolling out the mobile intrusive interstitials penalty yesterday

Google said the mobile intrusive interstitial penalty went live yesterday, but webmasters have not claimed any issues yet.

Google has officially confirmed they have begun rolling out the intrusive mobile interstitial penalty yesterday. Google warned us that this was coming almost a six months ago, and it did start rolling out on January 10, 2017, as Google promised.
Google’s John Mueller and Gary Illyes confirmed the penalty began rolling out yesterday.
This penalty only impacts intrusive interstitials that happen directly after going from a Google mobile search result to a specific page. It does not impact or penalize pages after that, so if you have a intrusive interstitial that comes up later in the click path on your website, this won’t impact it: it only looks for the intrusive interstitial after the click from the Google search results page.
Google said this means “pages where content is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as highly.”
Google explained which types of interstitials are going to be problematic, including:
  • showing a popup that covers the main content, either immediately after the user navigates to a page from the search results or while they are looking through the page.
  • displaying a standalone interstitial that the user has to dismiss before accessing the main content.
  • using a layout where the above-the-fold portion of the page appears similar to a standalone interstitial, but the original content has been inlined underneath the fold.
Here is a diagram from Google to convey the above points:

Google listed three types of interstitials that “would not be affected by the new signal” if “used responsibly.” Those types are:
  • Interstitials that appear to be in response to a legal obligation, such as for cookie usage or for age verification.
  • Login dialogs on sites where content is not publicly indexable. For example, this would include private content such as email or unindexable content that is behind a paywall.
  • Banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space and are easily dismissible. The app install banners provided by Safari and Chrome are examples of banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space.

We have yet to hear of webmasters complaining about being hit by this penalty, but as things change, we will let you know.
